A Metaphor for Marriage: Christ and the Church, Ephesians 5:28-33
Sunday Morning Meditation, 4.13.2025
Good morning everyone!
Perhaps no other metaphor or word-picture gives us a better idea and understanding of marriage than the relationship between Christ and the church. Paul makes some astounding claims and commands in this text, and calls men to love their wives not only selflessly, but as they would love themselves. Paul sets the bar high for men seeking to fulfill their God-given role and paints for us a picture of love, leadership, and service that can only be painted with a genuine love for God and reliance upon the power of the Holy Spirit. As we go to church this morning, similarly to last week, let us thank God for how he has showered us with his love through his Son Christ Jesus. May the way that Christ has loved us lead us to go therefore and love others in a similar fashion. Praise God we love him because he first loved us! (1 John 4:19). I hope you have a sweet time of worship and fellowship at church this morning.
Ephesians 5:28-33
In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.
